Status of the Collaboration (2003-2018)

Significant progress has been made on R&D of all the harware needed for the Fermilab project. US-DOE approved CD-1 for the project based on the status of the R&D and construction plans as presented by the Project Team in the end of 2017.

The construction, installation and commissioning of the proton Injector with hardware provided by Indian DAE has been successful. Collaborating DAE laboratories have jointly Researched, Designed and Developed many 1st article for the Superconducting Radio Frequency Linac. They are functioning as good as the US produced hardware.  1st batch of 5 Indian scientists and engineer (2 years visitors), have returned to DAE laboratories.

Hardware Development in India:

  • BARC (Mumbai):
    • BARC scientists have indigenously developed a Solid-State RF Power system at 325 MHz and associated protection and Slow Control systems. BARC is working with Indian DAE undertaking company ECIL in manufacturing these components.
    • BARC scientists designed the electromagnets for the injector. Electromagnets for BARC-Fermilab have been fabricated by a company in Chennai.
    • BARC scientists jointly designed and manufactured the 1.3 GHz Cryomodule Test Stand, which is operational at Fermilab.
    • Fermilab and BARC scientists have been jointly working on the design of a cryogenic plant and its control. Similar plant has been fabricated by European company before. An Indian company has design partnership with that company.
  • IUAC (Delhi):
    • IUAC scientists have manufactured two Single Spoke Resonator cavity.
    • These cavities were processed (ANL) and tested at Fermilab. The accelerating gradient and quality factor are like the US manufactured cavities.
  • RRCAT (Indore):
    • Significant Superconducting Radio Frequency accelerator technologies infrastructure has been built at Raja Ramanna Center of Advanced Technologies, Indore (RRCAT).
    • RRCAT scientists have produced several 1.3 GHz and 650 MHz cavities. There accelerating gradient and quality factor is like the US manufactured cavities.
    • RRCAT is working with INOXCVA, an India company in Gujarat on cryogenic equipment and test stands fabrication.
    • RRCAT scientists have indigenously developed a Solid-State RF Power system at 650 MHz. RRCAT is working with Indian DAE undertaking company ECIL in manufacturing these components.
  • VECC (Kolkata):
    • VECC scientists have developed an indigenous design of 650 MHz low beta cavity.
    • 1-cell cavity of this design have been manufactured in collaboration with IUAC.
    • This cavity was processed (ANL) and tested at Fermilab. The accelerating gradient and quality factor exceeds the design.
